Everything you need to know about Austrian motorway vignettes — types, pricing, purchase process, exemptions, and legal requirements. Accurate, honest, and up to date.
An Austrian motorway vignette (German: Autobahnvignette) is a mandatory road usage fee for driving on Austrian motorways and expressways managed by ASFINAG. Unlike toll booths, the vignette system operates on a time-based principle: you purchase a vignette valid for a specific period, and you may use the covered road network freely during that time.
The vignette requirement applies to all motor vehicles with a maximum permissible weight of up to 3.5 tonnes. Heavier vehicles are subject to the GO-Maut distance-based toll system instead. Motorcycles require their own vignette, which is priced differently from car vignettes.
Since 2023, Austria has transitioned primarily to the digital vignette system, where the fee is linked to your vehicle's licence plate rather than a physical sticker. However, sticker vignettes remain valid if purchased before the transition deadline.

See Pricing2-Month Vignette
Suitable for extended visits or frequent travellers over a two-month period. Offers better value than two consecutive 10-day vignettes for stays exceeding 10 days.

Confirm your vehicle falls under the standard vignette category (up to 3.5t). Motorcycles, camper vans under 3.5t, and standard passenger cars all require the same vignette type but may have different pricing tiers.
Select 10-day, 2-month, or annual based on your travel plans. Consider whether you will be making multiple trips within the year to determine the most cost-effective option. See our pricing page for a full comparison.
Purchase digitally via the ASFINAG website or app, or buy at petrol stations, ÖAMTC/ARBÖ offices, or post offices near the border. Digital vignettes are linked to your licence plate and are available from midnight on the selected start date.
Double-check your licence plate number before completing the purchase. Errors in the plate number cannot be corrected after purchase and may result in a fine. See our full process guide for detailed instructions.
Note: Exemptions do not apply automatically. If you believe your vehicle qualifies, carry supporting documentation and verify with ASFINAG before travelling. See our services page for more detail on exemption categories.
Driving on Austrian motorways without a valid vignette is a criminal offence under the Bundesstraßen-Mautgesetz (BStMG). Fines can reach up to EUR 3,000 in the most serious cases, with on-the-spot fines typically ranging from EUR 120 to EUR 240.
ASFINAG uses both fixed monitoring stations and mobile enforcement units. Digital vignettes are verified automatically via licence plate recognition cameras installed at motorway entry points. There is no grace period: the vignette must be valid from the moment you enter the motorway network.
Foreign-registered vehicles are not exempt from enforcement. Austria has bilateral agreements with neighbouring countries that allow cross-border debt collection for unpaid fines. See our policies page for information on appeals and complaints.
