Austrian Motorway Vignette Types

The Austrian motorway vignette system offers three duration options to accommodate different travel needs. Each type is available in both digital (licence plate-linked) and, where still applicable, physical sticker format. The choice between types should be based on the total number of days you plan to use Austrian motorways, not simply the duration of your stay in Austria.

10-day vignette

10-Day Vignette

Best for: Short visits, transit journeys, occasional motorway use

The 10-day vignette is the most flexible option for visitors making a single trip through Austria or staying for a short period. It is valid for 10 consecutive calendar days, starting from the date you select at the time of purchase.

Important: the validity period is fixed at the time of purchase and cannot be extended or transferred. If you purchase a digital 10-day vignette, it becomes valid from midnight on the selected start date.

2-month vignette

2-Month Vignette

Best for: Extended stays, seasonal workers, regular commuters

The 2-month vignette covers a continuous 60-day period and is the middle-tier option in the Austrian vignette range. It offers significantly better value than purchasing two consecutive 10-day vignettes for stays exceeding 10 days.

The 2-month vignette is particularly popular with seasonal workers, students on exchange programmes, and travellers making multiple trips to Austria within a two-month window.

Annual vignette

Annual Vignette

Best for: Austrian residents, frequent business travellers, regular motorway users

The annual vignette provides the best per-day value and is the standard choice for Austrian residents and anyone who uses Austrian motorways regularly throughout the year. It is valid from 1 December of the previous calendar year to 31 January of the following year — a period of approximately 14 months.

Annual vignettes for the upcoming year go on sale in November and can be purchased in advance, making them convenient for planning ahead.

Roads Included and Excluded

The standard vignette covers the majority of Austrian motorways (Autobahnen) and expressways (Schnellstraßen) managed by ASFINAG. However, several high-traffic mountain routes and tunnels require separate section tolls in addition to the vignette. Driving on these sections without paying the additional toll is a separate offence from driving without a vignette.

A time-based road usage fee for Austrian motorways. The term comes from the French word for a small decorative label. In Austria, it refers specifically to the motorway toll sticker or digital equivalent.

Sticker Vignette (Klebevignette)
The traditional physical vignette sticker that must be affixed to the inside of the vehicle's windscreen. Still valid if purchased before the transition deadline, but no longer the primary format.
